Serbia

SerbiaTraditionally a nation that has produced a huge number of gifted teams and players, as Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro, Serbia is looking to qualify for its first tournament. Currently in a hotly-contested group featuring Portugal and Poland this is a realistic but far from easy task, made easier by June’s victory over qualification rivals Finland in Helsinki.

With matches against Belgium on 22 August and Portugal on 12 September, the outcome of their campaign may well be clear by October and Serbia will need to rely on talent such as Manchester City transfer target Nikola Žigić to produce the goals that they need to take them into the top two of Group A and the finals next summer.

Nikola Zigic Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic believes Finland are out of the running and that his side are now engaged three-horse race with Poland and Portugal for the two qualifying places: "We have one team less to worry about and that's Finland. However, we are a still have a long way to go and it's going to be an uphill struggle because we're up against Poland and Portugal."
Nemanja Vidic Javier Clemente went on to commend the performances of the young Serbs who have recently come into the national side: "We controlled the game very well after scoring the early goal and sealed it in the closing stages," and singled out debutants Antonio Rukavina, Zdravko Kuzmanović and Jovanović as key preformers. "Rukavina is so young and he played like he had a wealth of experience, Jovanović did a great job while Kuzmanović was also very impressive."
