Republic of Ireland

Republic of IrelandSince the heady of days of the Jack Charlton era in the nineties, the expectations of the Irish fans have been high. With players such as Robbie Keane, Damien Duff, Steve Finnan, Shay Given and John O’Shea, this is a squad with enough talent to beat anyone.

Steve Staunton’s first qualifying campaign got off to disastrous start, however: a 1-0 away defeat to Germany was expected but the 5-2 thrashing in Cyprus was a humiliation that he could not have anticipated. Since then results have gone more to plan and a place in the top 3 of the group is virtually secured. Qualification will probably require wins against the Czech Republic and this is a tall order unless the team can play to their full potential.

Duff Injury:
Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has stated that winger Damien Duff is unlikely to be fit to play until at November at the earliest after having surgery on a foot injury. Duff, who picked up the injury during a league game at Portsmouth FC in April, is expected to miss all of his country's remaining qualifiers for Euro 2008 and will also be unavailable to new Newcastle United FC manager Sam Allardyce when the Premiership resumes in August. Speaking ahead of the friendly with Ecuador in New York, Staunton said: "It's at least five to six months but it depends on when he gets the cast off. I think we'll be planning without him for the campaign because he'll only be regaining his fitness. If he comes back before that, brilliant for us. If he doesn't, I'll have planned without him."
Duff has made 66 appearances for his country but should the timescale prove accurate he will miss the Republic of Ireland's qualifiers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic in September, with home games against Cyprus and Germany in October and November respectively also likely to come too early for the former Chelsea FC midfielder
