Despite the lack of world-class stars in the squad, Polish football is going strong after a disappointing display at the world cup in 2006. Leading the tough qualification Group A by 5 points (albeit having played two more games than Serbia and Poland), they are looking good for a qualification spot at the end of the campaign.
However, the last match, a surprise defeat to minnows Armenia, weakened the Poles’ prospects and good results against all the top teams will probably be required to maintain their standing in the Group. The next to matches are away fixtures against Portugal and Finland; if they can emerge with 4 points or better from those, they will be a strong indicator of their chances of making is to Austria and Switzerland.
Despite a proud FIFA World Cup finals record, Poland had yet to qualify for a UEFA European Championship final round after twelve attempts and this is a record they are keen to rectify. With coach Leo Beenhakker recently doing so well with Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 world cup, their hopes should be high.
