Shock winners of Euro 2004, Greece are leading Group C but have not had an easy time of it, their 4-0 home defeat to Turkey being a low point for many Greek fans. However, being 5 points clear at the top of the group must come as adequate consolation. Turkey, Bosnia and Norway seem to be vying for the second qualification spot.
Bosnia have to be commended for maintaining the former Yugoslavia’s reputation as pound-for-pound Europe’s hotbed of football talent production, rivaled only by the Netherlands, Portugal and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Norway and Turkey do not have perhaps the quality of previous teams, but both nations have superb support that could propel them to the finals next summer.
JumpTV will be screening the games online – please visit http://euro2008.jumptv.com/ for more details. Matches live and on demand include, on the 8th September, Hungary v Bosnia, Malta v Norway and Moldova v Norway and, on 12th September, Bosnia v Moldova and Turkey v Hungary. Greece v Bosnia and Moldova v Turkey take place on 13th October. These are however mere appetizers for the two head-to-heads between the top four that will have four days later: on 17th October Bosnia v Norway will almost certainly eliminate one of those teams from the running and, of course, there is Greece v Turkey. It’s not just the long-standing rivalry between these nations, nor the necessity of winning to qualify: Greece have to avenge a 4-0 humiliation. It’s going to be hot in Istanbul that night, no matter what the weather. Qualification also closes with what could be key matches for qualification on 21 October: Hungary v Greece and Turkey v Bosnia.
